Under the administration of nearly six years, I have always felt that as this Colony is constituted, a very great weight of duty rests on the Governor, and that on him mainly devolves the responsibility of success or failure. I have laboured assiduously under this conviction, and I am rejoiced if I may feel that I have not laboured in vain.
I will not attempt to describe the state of the Colony six years ago, but I have to thank Gentlemen, and the many friends who within the period of my administration have returned home, for the cooperation and support which has enabled me, as "The place with a good harbour between you and all clapsed." These are among the pleasurable reminiscences of the past. I may add that Lady Robinson and I have in social and private life endeavoured to soften asperities often almost unavoidable in the machinery of Colonial life. We have in private intercourse promoted cheerfulness and good will, and she and I alike will feel grateful to believe on your authority that our efforts have not been unattended with success.
Believe me that wherever our lot in life may be cast, Lady Robinson and I and our children will carry the warmest feelings of grateful remembrances of the kindness received and friendships formed here, which it will be pride to us to feel that we have at all times endeavoured to deserve.
